About Alexander Tamanian
Neoclassical architect who transformed the small city of Yerevan into the modern capital of Armenia. He designed such Yerevan features as the hydroelectric station, the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the Republic Square.
Before Fame
He graduated from St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1904. He designed V. P. Kochubei's mansion in Tsarskoye Selo in 1911 and Prince S. A. Scherbatov's house in Novinski Boulevard.
Trivia
He was a chairman on the Committee for the Protection of Historic Monuments in Armenia and had a part in restoring many of the country's landmarks.
Family Life
His father was a banker in Yekaterinodar. He married Camilla Edwards and their two sons, Gevorg and Yulius, also became architects.
