Gena Rowlands is an American actress and cinema icon. She was born Virginia Cathryn Rowlands on June 19, 1930, in Madison, Wisconsin.

Rowlands grew up in Cambria, Wisconsin, where she was raised by her parents, Mary Allen and Edwin Myrwyn Rowlands. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison before deciding to pursue acting. In 1950, Rowlands moved to New York City to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
