Gene Wilder, born Jerome Silberman, was an American film and stage actor, screenwriter, director, and author known for his extraordinary talent, versatility, and natural humor. He was born on June 11, 1933, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a Jewish family. Wilder's mother, Jeanne Baer Silberman, worked in a candy store, and his father, William J. Silberman, was a Russian immigrant who sold novelty items. Growing up, he was a shy child who struggled with his father's poor health and frequent career changes.

However, it was a visit to his sister's theatre rehearsal that sparked Wilder's passion for acting. When Wilder was only eight years old, his mother suffered from rheumatic fever and was bedridden for two years. To lift her spirits, Wilder put on performances for her. Later in life, he attended the University of Iowa to study theater and eventually moved to New York City to start his acting career.

Wilder's breakthrough role came in 1967 in the film Bonnie and Clyde, where he played a hostaget. However, it was his first major film role in The Producers, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also starred in other classic films, including Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Wilder's unique ability to balance his comedic and dramatic talents made him one of Hollywood's most distinctive actors.

Outside of his film work, Gene Wilder was also a novelist and director, directed and wrote several films as well. He also directed and starred in several movies, including The World's Greatest Lover and The Woman in Red.
