Gerrit Rietveld

Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch architect and furniture designer, famous for his iconic Red and Blue Chair, which is an illustration of the De Stijl artistic movement. Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, on June 24, 1888, Rietveld's father was a carpenter, with whom he began his apprenticeship at the age of 11.

After completing his apprenticeship, Rietveld received formal education in architecture and furniture making at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijzers (State School for Art Teachers) in Amsterdam. In 1917, he opened a furniture shop and later set up a business as a cabinetmaker. He became a member of the De Stijl movement in 1919, which was a group that aimed to generate a new kind of art and design that was minimalistic, abstract, and geometric.

Rietveld's Rietveld Schröder House, which he collaborated on with Truus Schröder-Schräder, has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The house is an essential example of the De Stijl movement, with its characteristic use of primary colors, rectangular-shaped openings, and open-plan spaces.
