Gwendolyn Brooks

Gwendolyn Brooks was an African-American Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who is widely recognized as one of the most prominent voices in modernist poetry. Born on June 7, 1917, in Topeka, Kansas, she gained national recognition for her works, such as Annie Allen and We Real Cool, which portrayed the struggles faced by African Americans in the United States.

Brooks’ literary talents became evident at an early age, when she published her first poem in a children's magazine at the age of just thirteen years old. She went on to attend the integrated Hyde Park High School in Chicago, where she was encouraged by her teachers to pursue her creative writing.

Her career took off in 1945 when her first collection of poetry, A Street in Bronzeville, was published. This was followed by a series of critically acclaimed works, including Annie Allen, which won her the Pulitzer Prize in 1950, and The Bean Eaters. In 1985, Brooks was named the U.S. Poet Laureate, becoming the first African American to hold the position.
