Born on June 4, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri, Jackie Hill-Perry grew up in an impoverished neighborhood in the city. She was the youngest of five children. As per her family background, she was raised in a single-parent household by her mother. Growing up, Jackie had to face many difficulties and challenges, including poverty and lack of resources, which forced her to mature faster than other kids her age. However, she was a bright student and went on to attend a local high school.

After her high school, Jackie decided to attend the Illinois Central College, where she studied creative writing. It was during this phase of her life that she started exploring the world of poetry. She was inspired by the spoken word performances of Sunni Patterson, and this pushed her to start writing her own poetry. In 2008, she converted to Christianity and, upon doing so, claimed to have converted from a lesbian to a straight woman. She regularly performed at The Passions for Christ Movement conferences, where she became known for her powerful performances.

In 2014, Jackie Hill-Perry released her debut rap album, The Art of Joy, which was widely appreciated and received positive reviews from critics. She followed it up with several other successful albums, including Crescendo, Hymn, and Jude. With her unique style and captivating lyrics, she has become an industry icon, and her work continues to inspire many.
