Jean-Claude Duvalier

Jean-Claude Duvalier, a prominent figure in Haitian history, was a renowned politician and the 41st President of Haiti. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on July 3, 1951, Duvalier was the son of François Duvalier, who served as the President of Haiti from 1957 until his death in 1971.

Following in his father's footsteps, Jean-Claude Duvalier assumed the presidency at the young age of 19 in 1971, making him one of the world's youngest heads of state. During his tenure, he exerted absolute control over the nation and was known for his oppressive and ruthless regime. Thousands of Haitians lost their lives under his regime, and the country struggled with widespread poverty and human rights abuses.

Before ascending to power, Duvalier obtained a sound education in law at the University of Haiti. The couple had two children together, Nicholas and Anya, who were born during Duvalier's presidency.

While Duvalier had his share of allies and supporters, his despotic rule also created a multitude of opponents and rivals. The challenges posed by these dissenting voices ultimately contributed to a popular uprising in 1986, which led to Duvalier's removal from office and exile.
