John Howard Griffin

John Howard Griffin was a Texas-born author and journalist of racial justice-themed works. Griffin's masterpiece was translated into fourteen languages and sold over ten million copies worldwide, making him one of the most famous memoirists of the twentieth century.

Born on June 16, 1920, in Dallas, Texas, John Howard Griffin was the son of John Griffin and Lena Griffin, a pianist. After completing his basic education, Griffin attended the University of Poitiers, where he studied French literature. Later, he enrolled in the French Ecole de Medecine, where he studied medicine. However, he never practiced medicine. Instead, he served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific theater.

Griffin's early literary works, published in the 1950s, included "The Devil Rides Outside," "Land of the High Sky," and "Nuni." These writings established Griffin as a promising author, but it was his courageous "Black Like Me" that earned him international acclaim.
