John Trumbull

John Trumbull was an American painter who is known for his iconic images of American Revolutionary War figures and battles. His famous painting, "Declaration of Independence" from 1817, appeared on the back side of the American two-dollar bill. Born in Lebanon, Connecticut on June 6, 1756, Trumbull was the son of Jonathan Trumbull, who served as the Governor of Connecticut from 1769 until 1784.

Despite a childhood injury that left him virtually blind in one eye, Trumbull pursued a career in painting. He received his early education at Lebanon Grammar School and then went on to attend Harvard College, where he studied under John Singleton Copley. Trumbull continued his studies by traveling to London in 1780, where he became a protégé of Benjamin West.

Trumbull's career took off when he served as General George Washington's second personal aide and as deputy adjutant-general to General Horatio Gates in June of 1776. During this time, Trumbull was able to witness firsthand many of the battles of the American Revolution, which inspired him to create some of his most famous works of art.

Trumbull was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects. He was paid an annuity of $1,000 by Yale University in 1831 in exchange for 28 of his paintings and 60 of his miniature portraits.
