However, his fame skyrocketed when he appeared in the groundbreaking 1973 reality series, An American Family, becoming a gay community icon for coming out during the show.

After the show, Lance shifted his focus to journalism and became a magazine writer. He wrote for prominent publications such as Creem, The Advocate, and Details, showcasing his writing talents and skills. He quickly became known as an influential voice for the LGBTQ+ community, using his platform to advocate for their rights.
