Margaret Abbott

Margaret Abbott was a pioneering American golfer who made history as the first American woman to take first place in an Olympic event. Born on June 15, 1878, in Calcutta, India, Margaret Abbott was raised in the United States. Her father, Charles E. Abbott, was a prominent physician who moved the family from India to the Chicago area. She grew up in an upper-class environment and was educated at the University of Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Margaret Abbott started playing golf at an early age, and soon became a skilled player. In 1900, she competed in the Women's Golf Tournament at the Paris Olympics and made history by winning the gold medal.
