She encouraged free African-Americans to immigrate to Canada, where they would face less discrimination. In the 1850s, Shadd achieved another milestone by editing the Provincial Freeman, an abolitionist journal that she founded. Through this newspaper, she fearlessly called for an end to slavery and championed the rights of African-Americans. Her work gained national attention, making her a prominent figure in the fight for equality.

At the remarkable age of sixty, she became the second American-born woman of African descent to earn a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
