About Maya Moore
Maya Moore is an American former professional basketball player, hailing from Jefferson City, Missouri. Born on June 11, 1989, Moore grew up with her mother, Kathryn Moore, who raised her as a single mother along with her two sisters, Ashley and Olivia Dabney.
Moore attended Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia, where she led her team to a state championship in 2007 and was named 2007 Naismith Prep Player of the Year. She went on to play college basketball at the University of Connecticut, where she won two NCAA Championships in 2009 and 2010, and helped lead the team to an undefeated season in 2009.
After her college career, Moore was selected first overall in the 2011 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx and won two WNBA Championships in 2011 and 2013. She also played professionally overseas for Ros Casares Valencia in Spain from 2011 to 2012 and China's Shanxi Xing Rui Flame in 2012.
Despite her successful basketball career, Moore took a hiatus from the sport in 2019 to focus on criminal justice reform. She worked to free Jonathan Irons, who was wrongfully convicted and served over 20 years in prison, and eventually married him in September 2020.
