Nick Drake

Nick Drake was an English folk singer-songwriter who was born in Rangoon, Burma, on June 19, 1948. He grew up in Tanworth-in-Arden, a village in the English Midlands, where he attended public school at Marlborough College.

From a young age, Drake was interested in music and learned to play the piano and clarinet. He also enjoyed sports and broke the 100-yard dash record at his school, as well as excelling at rugby. However, he eventually gave up sports to focus on his music career.

Drake's music career began in earnest in the late 1960s when he signed a recording contract with Island Records. He released his debut album, Five Leaves Left, in 1969, which was well-received by critics but failed to achieve commercial success. He followed up with two more albums, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon, before his tragic death in 1974.

Despite his limited commercial success during his lifetime, Drake's music posthumously gained popularity and he is now considered one of the most influential singers of his era. His haunting songs, such as "Pink Moon" and "Black Eyed Dog," have become classics of the folk genre.

Nick Drake was known for his introspective and melancholic music, which reflected his own struggles with depression and anxiety. He was a deeply private person who shied away from the spotlight, and his reluctance to perform live or participate in promotional interviews likely contributed to his lack of commercial success.

He was survived by his sister Gabrielle, who has worked to preserve his legacy in the years since his death.

Nick Drake was friends with many other notable musicians of his era, including fellow folk singers like John Martyn and Fairport Convention. He also had a number of admirers and imitators, such as the American singer Lucinda Williams, who covered Drake's song "Which Will" on her album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Despite the success of his contemporaries, however, Drake remains a unique and singular figure in the world of folk music.
