Pierre Culliford, famously known as Peyo, was a Belgian cartoonist and writer who created the beloved little blue creatures, The Smurfs. Peyo was born on June 25, 1928, in Schaerbeek, a suburb of Brussels, Belgium. He was the youngest of five children born to a British mother and a Belgian father. He took his name Peyo when his English cousin mispronounced Pierrot.

Peyo began his career in 1947, working as an illustrator for several Belgian publications. He spent most of his early career as an illustrator, never considering cartooning as a full-time profession. Sadly, Peyo passed away on Christmas Eve in 1992, due to a heart attack, which was a great loss to his loved ones and the entertainment industry.
