Portia White

Portia White was a Canadian opera singer known for her soulful voice and exquisite performances. Born in Truro, Nova Scotia on June 24th, 1911, Portia was the third of thirteen children. Her parents were both descendants of black Loyalists who had fled the United States during the American Revolution, and settled in Canada.

Portia had a passion for music from a young age, and her family encouraged her to pursue it. She began singing in church and school choirs, and at the age of 13, she won her first singing competition. Despite her love for music, Portia had to work hard to support herself and her family. She worked as a teacher in the small town of Africville during the 1930s and used her salary to pay for her music lessons.

In 1941, Portia was discovered by a music producer who was impressed by her beautiful voice. This led to her first public performance, and soon she became a well-known name in the Canadian music industry. Portia's fame continued to grow, and soon she was performing in prestigious venues across North America and Europe.

Portia's talents were not only appreciated by her fans, but also recognized by the Canadian government. In 1995, she was named a person of national historic significance by the Government of Canada, and to this day, she remains an important figure in Canadian music history.

Despite her success, Portia remained humble and dedicated to her art. Her personality was marked by a deep sense of gratitude and gratitude towards the people who supported her along the way. She believed that music had the power to bring people together and create positive change in the world.

Her legacy as a trailblazer and inspiration for young black artists will always be remembered.
