Salka Viertel

Salka Viertel was a highly acclaimed screenwriter and actress famous for her collaborations with legendary Hollywood actress, Greta Garbo. Born as Salomea Steuermann in Galicia, a region which is now part of Ukraine, on June 15, 1889, Viertel became a beloved figure in the film industry due to her exceptional scripts that garnered critical acclaim.

Viertel's personal life began in Austria-Hungary but it was forever changed after she moved to the United States in 1928, as Hitler's rise in Europe made it impossible for her to return. Prior to her move, Viertel was born to a Jewish family and was one of seven children. She was the sister of Eduard Steuermann, a notable pianist. In 1918, she tied the knot with Austrian screenwriter and director Berthold Viertel, with whom she had three sons. The couple parted ways in 1947, after being together for nearly three decades.

Viertel's remarkable personality traits were highlighted by her strong sense of determination and her love for writing.
