About Skip James

Skip James: The Delta Blues Legend

Skip James was an American Delta blues singer and guitarist who inspired a generation of musicians around the world. Born on June 9, 1902, in Bentonia, Mississippi, Henry Stuckey James grew up in a musical family. He learned to play the piano when he was only four years old, and at the age of nine, he started playing guitar. By the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in local juke joints and house parties.

Despite his love of music, Skip James pursued various jobs, including working on the railroad, in sawmills, and as a sharecropper. He eventually settled on road and levee construction, where he worked for several years. However, his passion for music remained strong, and he continued playing in his free time.

In 1931, Skip James was discovered by H.C. Speir, a talent scout who brought him to the studio to record his first single. He released several songs that became instant classics, including "Devil Got My Woman," "Crow Jane," and "I'm So Glad." Unfortunately, his music career was short-lived, and James retreated from the music scene for nearly three decades.

Skip James made a comeback in 1964 when he was rediscovered by blues enthusiasts who were eager to revive Delta blues. He appeared at several major folk music festivals throughout the country and became recognized as a leading figure in the blues community. His music inspired many musicians, including Eric Clapton, who covered James' "I'm So Glad" with his band Cream.

Skip James was known for his distinctive voice and fingerpicking style on the guitar. He often used open tunings, creating a sound that was both haunting and otherworldly. His music was often introspective, and his lyrics explored themes of love, death, and the human condition.

Despite his success, Skip James remained humble and committed to his art. He continued performing and recording until his death on October 3, 1969. His legacy lives on today, and he remains one of the greatest Delta blues musicians of all time.
