Born on June 17, 1837, in Waterford, Pennsylvania, Strong Vincent was the son of Sarah Ann Strong and iron foundryman B.B. Vincent. He attended Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and graduated from Harvard University in 1859. After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree, Vincent returned home and became a lawyer in Erie, Pennsylvania.

During the outbreak of the American Civil War, Vincent enlisted in the Union Army and quickly rose through the ranks. He initially served as a lieutenant in the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry before transferring to the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Vincent then earned a promotion to colonel and became the commander of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division of the V Corps.
