Will James

Will James was a Canadian-American writer and artist best known for his works that revolve around the American West. As a novelist, he has created captivating stories that have earned him a distinguished reputation in the world of literature. He was born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault on June 6, 1892, in Saint-Nazaire-d'Acton, Quebec, Canada.

Growing up, James developed a love for horses and the Wild West. He received minimal formal education and worked as a cowboy in his early years. However, his desire for adventure led him to cross the border illegally into Montana in 1910. He worked as a cowboy, ranch hand, and even as a stuntsman for a Wild West show before joining the U.S. Army in World War I.

After being honorably discharged, James settled in San Francisco, where he worked as a sketch artist for newspapers, including the San Francisco Examiner. He worked as a rancher in California between 1919 and 1920 before publishing his first literary work, an article in the January 1920 issue of Western Story Magazine.

James' most famous novel, Smoky the Cowhorse, won the coveted Newbery Medal in 1927 and remains his most famous novel. His other notable works include Bucking Horse Riders and Lone Cowboy, which cemented his place as a stellar novelist of the Wild West.

The writer and artist may have lived over 80 years ago, but his novels continue to be enjoyed by generations of readers. James' unique writing style, coupled with his in-depth knowledge of the American West and horsemanship, enthused many.
