Hattie McDaniel

Hattie McDaniel was an American actress, singer, and radio performer who made history by becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award. She was born in Wichita, Kansas on June 10, 1895, and grew up in Denver, Colorado. Raised in a family of performers, McDaniel's father was a minstrel show performer and her mother was a gospel singer.

McDaniel began performing at a young age and joined a traveling minstrel troupe with her siblings. Later, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. However, she faced many racial barriers in Hollywood and often struggled to find work. Instead, she worked odd jobs as a maid, washroom attendant, and cook while continuing to audition for acting roles.

In 1934, McDaniel landed her breakthrough role as a maid in the film "Judge Priest." She went on to appear in over 300 films throughout her career, including her most famous role as Mammy in "Gone with the Wind." Her other notable credits include "The Little Colonel" and "The Great Lie."
