His father, Lang Guoren, was an erhu musician, and his mother, Zhou Xiulan, was a nurse. Growing up, Lang Lang was fascinated by music and expressed a deep interest in playing the piano. Despite Lang Lang's early promise, his piano teacher believed that he did not have the innate talent required to attend the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

However, Lang Lang was determined to pursue his musical dreams. He continued to work tirelessly and eventually won a spot at the prestigious conservatory. At the age of 15, he won first prize in the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians, cementing his place as a rising star in the international music scene.

Lang Lang's international presence as a classical pianist has led to amazing collaborations with other great musicians and conductors, including Plácido Domingo, Daniel Barenboim, and Sir Simon Rattle.

Lang Lang married German-Korean pianist Gina Alice Redlinger in June 2019 and in 2020, they became parents to a baby girl, Abigail Lang.
